Club Captains

At Phoenix Netball Club we encourage our players and coaches to be the best they can be, and we reward those who strive to stand up as leaders. The club's leadership program is designed to help create and develop strong leaders that will encourage participation and unity by creating bonds and connections across the club.

Captain positions

Players selected as captains will have a unique opportunity to develop as leaders and will be closely supported by the club’s management committee.

Club Captain and Club Vice Captains — are appointed to lead the entire player body of the club. They will provide a link between the management committee and the playing body and will ensure the views of players contribute to the development of the club by providing advice and guidance from a player perspective. The Vice Captain will act in place of the Club Captain when they are absent.

Captain responsibilities and duties

Being a leader in sport is a great privilege, but it also comes with responsibility and accountability to make decisions in the best interest of players and the club.

The captain positions each carry individual duties, as well as a responsibility to work together as a team to develop and implement initiatives for all players registered with the club.

Roles and responsibilities:

    Club Captain

    • Appointed to represent the entire player body of the club. They will provide a link between the management committee and the playing body and will ensure the views of players contribute to the development of the club by providing advice and guidance from a player perspective.
    • Act as a role model for the Vice Club Captains.
    • To be the main point of contact for the Player Representative. 
    • Manage the Instagram account and be responsible for organising posts between the Club Captains. Instagram should be used to highlight and support all teams of Phoenix Netball Club.
    • Assist in organising events for the Club. This includes attending committee meetings where necessary, organising entertainment, decorations, themes etc. and working with the Club Captains and the Committee to run events. Some events include Teams Day, Nippers Carnival, Downey Park Fundraiser, Dawn Service, Trophy Night etc.
    • A key part of the role of the Club Captains is to encourage players to support and attend other team games. The Club Captain is responsible for organising the attendance of these games.

    Club Vice Captain

    • Appointed to represent the entire player body of the club. They will provide a link between the management committee and the playing body and will ensure the views of players contribute to the development of the club by providing advice and guidance from a player perspective.
    • Appointed to represent the player body of the club. They will provide a link between the management committee and the playing body and will ensure the views of players contribute to the development of the club by providing advice and guidance from a player perspective.
    • To support and aid the Club Captain wherever possible. To help manage the workload and ensure responsibilities are being met. • Organise and schedule uploads for the Instagram account. This includes video ideas, photo themes, posting about relevant events coming up in both the Phoenix and Downey Park Calendars and supporting teams throughout the Club and highlighting them weekly.
    • Assist the Club Captain and Player Representative in organising events for the Club.
    • Attending Phoenix games on Saturdays as directed by the Club Captain.

Selection process

Being named a captain is an honour. The positions will be given to players who are respected and trusted to lead the club towards achieving success in sport, as well as the goals of Phoenix Netball club.

Each year players will be able to nominate for these positions, which will be chosen based on merit by a selection committee. Players will need to demonstrate they meet the position selection criteria and complete the Nomination Form.


Selection criteria:

To apply you need to be at least 15 years old and meet the following criteria:

  • Have been a member of Phoenix Netball Club in 2022 and a registered member in 2023.
  • Have an interest in leadership and commitment to learn how to lead, communicate and be a positive role model.
  • Be passionate about netball and supporting your local community, and contribute to the success of the Phoenix Netball Club. 
  • Desire to be involved in club activities such as fitness and strength training, fundraising, carnivals and presentation night, and encourage others to do the same.

Complete the Club Captain Nomination Form 2023 and email to president@phoenixnetball.org.au along with your response to the selection criteria.

Nominations close Wednesday 22 February 2023. (Late nominations will not be accepted.)
