Team Selection Policy

NON-COMPETITIVE TEAM PLACEMENT

7.5 years, 8 years and 9 years

With regards to the 7, 8 and 9 years teams, Phoenix Netball Club ensures that there is a mix of returning players and new players in each team.  We DO NOT keep the same teams together from the previous year. We stress to both players and parents that when you join our club you become part of the Phoenix Family, which is not limited to school groups, or predeveloped friendship groups.

Playing netball is a team sport that allows players to solidify current friendships but also gives them the chance to expand their friendship base with other players within the club.  At different times in their netball career they will come in contact with a wide variety of players.  Our position on team allocations is an important part of the players development and transition to competitive netball.

As part of the registration process, parents will have the opportunity to provide a friend request or provide any additional information that may contribute to the decision regarding Team Placement. Where possible Phoenix Netball Club will try to meet these requests with consideration of the forementioned details within this policy.

We thank all parents for their understanding and support.

COMPETITIVE TEAM PLACEMENT

10 YEARS - OPENS

Phoenix Netball Club’s selection policy is built on the belief that players thrive when they are placed in teams that match their stage of development, support their enjoyment of the game, and encourage long‑term participation. For players aged 10 years through to Opens, team placement is determined through a structured grading and trials process. This process considers each athlete holistically to ensure they are placed where they can grow, contribute, and experience success.

During trials, selectors assess several key areas: skills and fitness, age and experience, game play awareness, level of commitment, attitude and motivation, and each player’s goals and ambitions in netball. These factors help the panel match players to teams and divisions that best suit their current ability and potential. The club views team allocation as an important part of a player’s development and their transition into competitive netball, ensuring teams are balanced and able to compete effectively throughout the season.

Parents and players may provide friend requests or additional information during registration to support team placement decisions. While the club will consider these requests, final selections must align with the broader principles of fairness, development, and team balance outlined in this policy. The priority is always to create an environment where players can enjoy netball, build confidence, and strengthen their skills.

Phoenix Netball Club appreciates the cooperation and support of families throughout the selection process. By working together, we aim to create positive experiences that help every player develop a lifelong love of netball.

TRIALS PROCESS 10 YEARS or older

In order to be placed into a team, it is the club’s expectation that all players turning 10 years or older will participate in a grading/trial process.

If players cannot participate in all sessions, they can only be graded on the sessions they do attend and the observations made at those times. Please respond to the Trail Invitations when sent as soon as possible if a player is not available for the seasons trials dates.

Typically trials,

  • will consist of 2- 3 sessions
  • be held indoors
  • will occur mid February - dates will be confirmed as soon as they are known

THE PROCESS

Please understand that to respect all players and the integrity of the process, we’re unable to conduct trial discussions outside of the panel prior to finalising teams.

On the day, we will also have assistance from other club members to facilitate admin duties and run on sheets, in addition to helping our players prep for their court time.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

To help you prepare for the trial process, here are some key areas that our selection panel will consider:

  • Skills and fitness
  • Age and experience
  • Game play
  • Level of commitment
  • Attitude, motivation and drive
  • Goals and ambitions in netball
  • Matching players to teams and divisions that best suit player ability

These outcomes, when considered holistically, will create the highest level of enjoyment for our players. We want them to become netballers for life and always continue to enjoy the game we all love.

We understand that trials can be an anxious time for our players, so please be assured that we will do our very best to keep the environment as relaxed and equitable as possible. We want our players to feel confident in our commitment to support them, encourage them to improve and enjoy whichever level of netball they are at right now.

The great news is that our panel members also enjoy watching player development during the DPNA season, and they will have insights that can considered along with how our players perform on the day.

In addition to the above criteria, we will also need to consider team balance and player numbers so we can successfully field teams throughout the season.
